The Data Communication System (DCS)

The Data Communication System (DCS) is a multiservice radio network infrastructure conceived to support vital and non-vital data communication in railway and industrial environment, such as Communication Based Train Control (CBTC). The Comesvil DCS is composed of four networks:

 

  • The Core Network (CN) conceived to enable the connection and the management of the entire network infrastructure
  • The Backbone Network (BN) allows the connection between the Core Network and the Wayside network
  • The Wayside Network (WN) implements an uninterrupted, high speed and reliable communication between moving train and the radio base station installed on trackside. It’s combine different Wi-Fi  technologies such as IEEE 802.11a,b,g,n and ac
  • The Train Network (TN) implements the onboard Ethernet network, including the radio equipment

In this direction, Comesvil develops tailored solutions designed to full fit the customer’s specifications and the business needs.

Cable Transmission Networking

The Cable Transmission Networking (CTN) allows the transport of information (data and voice) between the various different nodes, and facilitates the network management operations from the Operative Control Center. The CTN is based on the combination of passive fiber optic cabling and active equipment for the data transport such as ROADM components (Reconfigurable Optical Add and Drop Multiplexer). The CTN represents the backbone network allowing the bidirectional transmission of audio, video e data exchanges between core and metro nodes. It is designed to provide high capacity and transparent media for transferring information. The CTN is:

  • Based on SDH/DWDM/OTN/GB Ethernet/MPLS/TCP-IP
  • Standalone system, using off-the-shelf equipment with and industry-wide standard interfaces and open standards
  • Designed to be fully redundant and avoid point of failure
  • Based on a double 10 Gbps ring architecture

 

The CTN provide IP Transport functionalities for the following Sub-Systems:

CTN Access, Transport and Core infrastructure

 

The CTN use mixed optical/packet technologies with routing capabilities that ensure:

  • Possibilities for simple localization and elimination of faults and disturbances

Radio Networking

The Radio Networking (RN) allows the transport of information (data and voice) between different nodes, using radio point-to-point links. The RN is based on the combination active equipment for the data transport such as Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 a/b /g/n components working at different operative frequencies (2.4Ghz, 5GHz, 17Ghz).

The RN represents a backbone network allowing the bidirectional transmission of audio, video e data exchanges between radio nodes. It is designed to provide high capacity and transparent media for transferring heterogeneous information.

Radio links are frequently used for various purposes within telecommunications and broadcast networks, on either a permanent or temporary basis. Usually the justification for using a radio link instead of a wired or optical fibre link relates to geography or economics. They can often be used to provide fixed communication links between stations in a network supporting a different service (such as mobile telephony): an application known as ‘infrastructure’ or ‘backhaul’.

Access Control and Intrusion Detection System (ACID)

The ACID System provides an integrated solution for intrusion detection and access control, used to enable staff or authorized people to gain access to selected areas and sites, using proximity identification cards in conjunction with smart card readers located near to the doors. The integrated intrusion detection system permits to monitor rooms and areas at restricted access and detect breaches and unauthorized intrusion raising a proper alarm. In the railway context, the ACID System can be used to protect the following locations:

  • Stations
  • Tunnel portals
  • Car parks
  • Depots and stabling area
  • OCC and offices areas
  • Evacuation shafts
  • Electric substation along the line

 

The ACID System, can be easily integrated, through the Short Messaging System (SMS), with:

  • The CCTV sub-system, in order to automatically alert the operators in the OCC or Station Room cameras allowing the monitoring of the relevant devices alarmed or the access control event.
  • Be transferred to the SCADA system and monitored in the OCC and Station Room command.
  • Be interfaced with the fire alarm system, in order to release and open the controlled closed doors in case of fire for staff evacuation
